Teeth Whitening Q & A
Teeth Whitening Q & A
Why do I have yellow teeth?
Many factors contribute to the
discoloration of your teeth. Certain foods and drinks — like coffee, tea,
turmeric, and wine — stain your teeth, as do the tar and nicotine in tobacco
products. Certain medications like tetracycline and doxycycline can also cause
staining.
Your age contributes to the
discoloration of your teeth. As you age, your tooth enamel becomes thinner,
allowing the softer, darker interior tissue called dentin to start to show. If
you have a dental injury or trauma, your teeth recover by creating more dentin,
which can cause your teeth to darken.
What happens during teeth whitening
treatment?
During an in-office teeth whitening treatment, a cheek retractor is placed in your mouth that holds your lips away
from your teeth.
Soft tissue like gums is properly isolated.
The peroxide-based bleach gel is applied to your teeth, carefully
avoiding your gums and other soft tissues.
Once your teeth are coated with the
bleaching gel, a special light is directed towards your teeth to activate the
gel.
You relax in the chair for 30 minutes
while your teeth are lightened. When the treatment is complete, the gel is
wiped off, the cheek retractor is removed and a proper mouth rinse is done. You
go home with a bright, white smile!
Why are professional teeth whitening better than home bleaching kits?
We, at The Dental Roots, use more
effective bleaching materials that deliver results more quickly. We also
thoroughly examine your teeth before the whitening treatment to ensure that
your teeth are healthy and strong enough for bleaching.
Over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments typically require multiple applications of the bleaching agent with
no guarantee of the same result. The longer exposure to the gel can cause teeth
sensitivity and can harm your teeth.
How should I take care of my teeth
after a whitening treatment?
You may experience minor temperature
sensitivity for a day or so following your teeth whitening treatment. You
should take care with hot and cold drinks for your own comfort if this happens.
Otherwise, brush and floss your teeth as normal.
